SouthStar Executes First On-Screen Methane Intensity Certificate Trade on Xpansiv CBL
September 1, 2026
ATLANTA and NEW YORK — Xpansiv, the leading infrastructure provider for the global energy transition markets, announces the first on-screen match of MiQ Certificates on the Xpansiv CBL spot exchange. SouthStar Energy Services, one of the largest retail natural gas providers in the United States, was a counterparty to the trade.
The transaction covered 5 million MiQ Certificates and was the first to be matched directly through the CBL order book, rather than negotiated bilaterally and submitted for settlement as a block trade. SouthStar will use the certificates to complement its Greener Life® program, which helps more than 110,000 customers offset the environmental impact of their natural gas usage, by providing independently verified information about the environmental attributes of the natural gas SouthStar supplies.
“Our Greener Life program gives customers a straightforward way to address the emissions associated with their natural gas use,” said Mike Braswell, President and CEO of SouthStar Energy Services. “This first-of-its-kind transaction reinforces our commitment to practical, market-based solutions that help customers offset their emissions and help protect the environment.”
The transaction follows several large MiQ Certificate trades settled on Xpansiv CBL earlier this year, reflecting the growing use of market-based tools to support the purchase and sale of certified natural gas attributes. Each MiQ Certificate represents one MMBtu of independently audited natural gas and serves as a registry-tracked, third-party-verified attribute that lets buyers substantiate the methane emissions intensity of their supply.
MiQ Certificates are being considered as a compliance pathway with the European Union Methane Regulation and are being used to procure lower methane-intensity natural gas for data centers and other large energy users.
“This first on-screen match demonstrates that certified methane instruments can be transacted through the same transparent and efficient market infrastructure used for other environmental commodities,” said Russell Karas, Senior Vice President, Xpansiv. “Xpansiv CBL gives participants a scalable way to put verified methane intensity data to work across applications ranging from residential energy programs to regulatory compliance and large-scale energy procurement.”
The trade was executed and settled on Xpansiv CBL, the world’s largest energy and environmental commodity spot exchange. Its central limit order book supports transparent price discovery, liquidity formation and instant trade executions, as well as automated, T+0 settlement for exchange-matched trades.
