GNG Highlights Employees During Black History Month

January 31, 2024

Like our parent company Southern Company Gas, Georgia Natural Gas believes in doing all we can to Fuel Equity within our organization and our communities. This means putting our belief in the value of intentional inclusion into practice.

As part of Black History Month, we're highlighting several employees who share how they celebrate themselves in the workplace.

Demesha A.

Training Manager

How do you celebrate yourself at work?

I believe in acknowledging personal achievements and milestones, both big and small. For instance, when I accomplish a training initiative, I take a moment to reflect on what I've learned and achieved and implement immediately for the next training. I also appreciate the value of positive feedback and recognition from colleagues. Celebrating success not only boosts my morale but also contributes to a positive work environment.

What does representation or inclusion mean to you?

Representation and inclusion, to me, are fundamental in fostering a diverse and collaborative workplace. It means ensuring that every individual, regardless of background or identity, feels heard, valued, and has equal opportunities. It's about creating an environment where diverse perspectives are not only acknowledged but actively sought out. Personally, I see the strength in our differences, and I strive to contribute to an inclusive culture by embracing and respecting the uniqueness each person brings to the team.

How do you celebrate yourself at work?

I celebrate myself in the workplace by showing up each day as my authentic self. I take advantage of opportunities provided to engage with individuals throughout the organization and within the community. I acknowledge my unique contributions and accomplishments. I advocate for myself. One of the most important ways in which I celebrate myself is by seeking out mentorship opportunities and support from other women of color. I have a strong desire to understand their journey and glean from their experiences.

What does representation or inclusion mean to you?

In my book, representation allows everyone to have a seat at the table, no matter the individuals’ race, gender, age, religion, or sexuality. It is diversity. Inclusion means ensuring that the individual has all that is needed to have an equal opportunity/experience as their counterparts once the seat is provided. Even if there is a difference of opinion, an inclusive environment acknowledges and respects everyone’s viewpoints.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

Black History Month means so much to me and its value cannot be easily measured. Black History is defined by me as experiences of people in the United States that are of African descent. The month of February is an opportunity to showcase those experiences and share with others. Black History Month’s goal is to remind people of the resilience, strength, and history of our diverse group. It puts a spotlight on the struggles, achievements, and contributions of many black individuals throughout our history.

Black History Month celebrates the accomplishments and traditions of so many important people who have contributed to making this country an amazing place.

In addition to all those wonderful things, Black History Month is also a reminder of the continuous struggles to defeat inequality, the fight for social justice, & the eradication of racism.

In conclusion, Black History Month is an opportunity to share our experiences and to promote our contributions to making our country a beacon of hope for so many.  This is the reason why it’s so important to me.

At GNG, we believe that intentional inclusion is not just a one-time event during one month of the year, but a continuous effort. By shining a light on the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our employees, we hope to inspire others to embrace and celebrate their own cultures and identities, both within the workplace and in their own communities.
