Nearly 30K Pounds of Electronics Collected During Annual Earth Day Recycling Event

April 26, 2023

For the third year, Georgia Natural Gas celebrated Earth Day with our annual electronics recycling event on April 22 at Lenox Square Mall.

Our goal this year was to collect 20,000 pounds of electronics.

Thanks to a busy day, over 29,000 pounds were donated! That means nearly 14 and a half tons of electronics will be kept out of landfills and will be recycled or repurposed instead.

As the community made their donations, they were invited to make their own terrarium thanks to Lenox Square Mall.

“Lenox Square would like to express our gratitude to our wonderful partners - Georgia Natural Gas, eWaste ePlanet, and 11 Alive News - for helping to grow the event and make it a continued success,” says Talia Moffitt, Communications Manager for Lenox Square Mall. “We are thrilled to host the Earth Day electronic recycling drive and help the community get rid of their old electronics while doing something good for the environment.”

Over the duration of the 6-hour event, everything from unused fax machines and broken gaming consoles to cameras and TVs were dropped off to be recycled by eWaste ePlanet.

“Our team over at eWaste ePlanet is on a mission to break the cycle of overconsumption, which involves reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and recycling existing materials and products as long as possible," says Rob Pyecha, VP of Business Development & Sustainability for eWaste ePlanet. "By partnering with GNG, 29,374 pounds of electronics, metals, and plastics were kept out of a Georgia landfill. We will find a new life for the equipment through reuse or by turning outdated technology back into a recyclable commodity. Every day is Earth Day at eWaste ePlanet, but we are especially proud to take part in this public offering every year.”

If you weren’t able to make it to the event this year, eWaste ePlanet will take your electronics throughout the year.
